Does Mother?s Denied Guilt Lead to Eating Disorders?

Can Mother’s Obsessive/Compulsive Behavior Add Body Fat or Cause Weight Loss?

In this story of Sally, what obsessive/compulsive behaviors might lead to the following eating disorders of extreme weight loss or bingeing with added body fat?  Sally is a grandmother who lives in a retirement home.  She’s found sneaking her favorite meal of whip cream smothered over chocolate ice cream.  Her diet habits from childhood are still wreaking havoc on her life decades later.  Sally’s mother had obsessive/compulsive behaviors.  How might this acting out by eating sweets be driven by denied guilt?  Maybe the answers can be found in the following story.

            1. An adult child is in the grip of guilt that eats away at her core. She obsesses about food constantly.  She’s in the trash finding the crumbed cookies she just bought and threw away hoping she could stop eating them.  She can’t stop this eating disordered behavior.

            2. The adult daughter is now a mother of two daughters, six and eight years old.  She tells them both how bad ice cream and refined sugar is for them.  She does everything from making homemade birthday cakes with fruit as sweetening to never once going to McDonalds.  This mother is afraid her daughters will put on too much body fat.  Yet this mother is repeating the denied guilt cycle of obsessive/compulsive behaviors towards sugar laden and fattening foods down to the last crumb of a cookie.

What do you think happens when her daughters visit a friend’s house where there are cookies and candy?  Or what do you think happens when her daughters reach their teens with money in their pockets and they’re out with peers?  One of two things can happen to these daughters.

1.  They may still restrict their food because of guilt like their mother and develop an eating disorder with extreme weight loss.

2.  They may overeat and become out of control with their food intake and add body fat along with an eating disorder.

Either one is devastating to a daughter’s mind/body/and spirit. The vicious eating and obsessive/compulsive behaviors cause generational extremes of behaviors such as the all or nothing swinging from out of control eating to the other end of restricting eating choices.  These behaviors are termed eating disorders.

What’s unique about Dr. Fuller’s approach is that taking an objective view of the effects that a mother’s beliefs about food can have on her children and the generations to come. When you understand the cause you can begin to search for the answers to change.

Go ahead and review the following list of behaviors to determine where you might be.  Then look at where you want to be and the steps to get there.

- Candy gifts are especially perfect for milestone birthdays. Our favorite merchant for candy has “retro” candy gifts based on the decade. So for someone turning 30 or 35 for example, you might get them the 80’s package. All kinds of candy you can’t find now, but it’s still freshly made and shipped at low cost.

- If you need a sugar free gift for dietary reasons, this store can also help. With hard candy, licorice and even sugar free Jelly Belly’s, there’s something that’s sure to please.

Children Juvenile Diabetes

When a kid has diabetes, there are several experiences that they lose out on. Halloween for the diabetic kid, means picking up a bag of treats they will not get to enjoy. Playing at a friend’s's house entails heading home for medication or a shot, and having to decline to sweet nibbles if they are offered. Class parties can leave a kid feeling left out when sugary treats are being served and a birthday without cake and ice cream appears dismal.

If you have a child that has been diagnosed as having diabetes, there are methods to make their birthday special. With a little preplanning a birthday celebration for a diabetic kid can be plenty of fun for everybody.

As your kid’s party approaches, make sure that they’re eating thoroughly and doing all they can to keep their blood sugar levels under control. The fun of the day can change their appetite and not eating can wreak havoc on blood sugar. Ensure that on the day of the party, your kid eats a good breakfast and has a snack before everybody arrives. Ensure that they are well rested the evening before their party and if at all possible have your child take a short rest or nap the day of their party.

If it is too hard to plan a menu that your kid can eat and the other guests will enjoy, simply plan to have your party in the afternoon, so guests will not be expecting you to serve them lunch or dinner. If you are providing food, ensure that there are lots of healthy things to eat, served in fun ways. Put out trays of plants rather than chips with dip, or crackers and cheese.

Instead of giving candy as party favors, give out small toys. The youngsters will be so busy, that a lack of snacks will not bother them.

It is tough to avoid a birthday cake at a party. If your kid’s diabetes is in hand, a small piece doubtless will not do any harm them. You can even check with your bakery and see if they’ve a diabetic friendly recipe for birthday cake.

The best thing you can do to make your child feel special on their birthday is to make the day as ordinary as possible . Don’t make your child eat sugar free cake while the guests get a sugar sweetened variety. Don’t make a big deal over the proven fact that the cake is sugar free. Most of your visitors will probably not even notice. Just have a great time, keep an eye on your child, and congratulate yourself on another year of successfully controlling your tiny one’s diabetes.
