How to Keep Fresh Your Baked Goodies Longer
Jun 29, 2010 Bread Bakeries
Nothing beats the taste of freshly baked goodies such as cookies, brownies or bread. However, you may not always be able to enjoy them as fresh as they came out of the oven every time you want to. Bakeries would do everything to assure you that the baked goods you get from them are oven-fresh but it happens that they will still go stale and lose their delicious taste once they are exposed to air for some time. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to revive the fresh taste of your cookies and breads at home.
To keep bread, cakes or cookies fresh, add half an apple to the container where you want to store them. The moisture present in the apple will help maintain the moisture in your favorite baked goods, so that they are kept soft and nice looking for a longer time.
Cakes and bread can be frozen wrapped in a cloth towel. The towel extracts the moisture from the baked goodies thus allowing them to be kept longer in the freezer. Never use paper towel as it will only disintegrate and not do its work. If freezer space doesnt allow you to wrap the cake or bread fully, covering them with a cloth towel will work as well.
You can also try wrapping cake in saran and freezing it. Wait until it is frozen solid and then put the frozen cake in a zip lock bag. Depending on the kitchen temperature, some people have had success in keeping cake at room temperature for several days by simply using a piece of plastic to wrap the cake, followed by a foil wrap. This only works where the temperature is not over 75 degrees F. If the temperature exceeds this range, store the cake in the fridge instead.
To return dry, crumbling cookies to their original condition, put them on a cookie sheet, wet a thin dish towel and wring it thoroughly. Place it over the cookies and bake them for 5 minutes in a 350 degrees oven. You can also layer the cookies in a 9×13 plastic container. Place a wax paper over the first layer and then put more cookies on top. On the final layer, place another piece of wax paper and a piece of fresh bread. Cover the container and keep in a cool, dry place. Replace the bread when it turns stale or hard. Never place the fresh piece of bread directly on your cookies to prevent them from becoming very soft or mushy. If you baked the cookies yourself, cool them completely before storing them in this manner.
You can store fresh muffins in the freezer individually in a plastic bag. In the night before, take out of the freezer the quantity you want for breakfast. Thaw them overnight. Warm them in an oven toaster in the morning. The length of time will depend on how crispy you want them to come out. You can also microwave them for ten seconds immediately before eating them.
